Final major project self-initiated brief looking at ethics in design.
William Burroughs said ‘No one owns life, but anyone who can pick up a frying pan owns death’. I looked at ethics in design with regards to the morality of the designer in the context of the intentionality of an object. Does the designer have a moral responsibility to consider the different ways in which an object may be used?
To illustrate this I used a frying pan. A frying pan is the most commonly used instrument in domestic violence. How many designers are really aware of this? By making this clear I am offing the consumer a choice: they determine the outcome and clear of the consequences of their actions. So I designed a lethal frying pan (weapan) to highlight the issue of user/designer responsibilities. Using a designed object as a tool of communication.
