To turn a non-place into a space.

The use of flowers to create a temporary memorial shrine at traffic islands. A non-place can be turned into a very symbolic place as soon as tragedy strikes. The places become a place of mourning. Suddenly these places become a gathering point marked by flowers and personal messages. Traffic islands are a transit point, a non-place, a place we wish to escape as soon as possible, as soon as the green man tells us to. The red man however is trapped there, a guardian who can never leave. On traffic island h065 in Holborn, the red man tried to escape and died. We turned traffic island h065 into a memorial to him. The message was ignore the red man and you to could suffer similar consequences.

We decorated the traffic light where the red man tried to escape with flowers. We were surprised how many people stopped to take notice suddenly this transitory non-place became a memorial, a place in their consciousness. The space gains an identity. An old woman took offence and the police eventual arrived and we were asked to move on.
