A self-initiated brief to look at the problems of homelessness.
I spent four months in Centrale, Milan’s Red Light district, the area both shocked and inspired me. For two weeks I documented the area. As part of my research I embarked on a three-day stay in Rome without money, mobile phone or food to get a taste of what it is like to be homeless. From my experience and documentation of homeless people in both Rome and Milan the three recurring concerns were boredom, ignorance and comfort. I realised it would be extremely naive of me to believe I could design a solution to all the problems of being homeless, so I chose to focus on those three main themes.
The box is an adaptation of a standard Mc Donald’s box used to carry fries through out the world, an acknowledgment that the issue of homelessness a global problem. The box folds out to form a ground mat to sleep on (comfort). Printed on the side panels of the box is a campaign (recognition and visibility) and a game of chess (boredom).
